AI safety researcher Sören Mindermann moves to Tsinghua, co-founds Beijing AI Safety Hub

Sören Mindermann announces he is moving to Beijing to become an assistant professor in frontier AI safety (especially loss of control) at Tsinghua University's College of AI, while keeping his Cambridge work. He is co-directing the new Beijing AI Safety Hub (BASH), inspired by Constellation and LISAI; its first residency cohort is accepted and Spring 2027 applications are open. In a long-form post he argues that amid loss-of-control concerns and Trump-Xi summits, the West–China AI understanding gap is striking, and being in Beijing uniquely positions him to build shared scientific understanding and strengthen safety work — recruiting PhD students, postdocs, residents and a Chief of Staff.
