Open side sweeps all three open-vs-closed AI debates at GitHub HQ; Percy Liang on the enterprise IP bottleneck
stanfordnlp · x · 2026-10-21
At Open Source AI Week, three open-vs-closed AI debates were held at GitHub HQ and the audience voted the open side the winner in all three. Debaters included MIRI CEO Malo Bourgon vs Ion Stoica, and M12's Cheryl Cheng vs Black Forest Labs' Ben Brooks. Percy Liang's standout argument: once general intelligence is good enough, the bottleneck becomes specialized knowledge that lives inside enterprises unwilling to send their IP to closed labs. The closed side's best line: "We're entering the iPhone 17 era of LLMs."
