Claude Code regression: auto mode blocks all in-project edits since 2.1.299
d3x3b · ghdev · 2026-10-15
A user reports a regression in Claude Code 2.1.299/2.1.300 (Windows): in auto mode, every Edit/Write to files inside the working directory is rejected with "server-side auto mode classifier gave no verdict (it skipped this action)" (toolDenialKind: automode-unavailable).
Root cause: up to 2.1.296 such edits passed via the local acceptEdits fast path; in 2.1.299+ that fast path no longer applies, the server classifier returns skipped for these calls, and the CLI fails closed—leaving auto mode unable to edit any project file. C: paths and the M:\ root classify normally; only project subdirectories are affected.
Repro: headless claude -p "<write one file>" --permission-mode auto --debug-file—2.1.300 logs "Auto mode classifier unavailable ... (fail closed)" while 2.1.296 writes the file. Workaround: downgrade to 2.1.296.
