Sam (@QualzzSam) won the September $20,000 Gold Medal in the Vesuvius Challenge Progress Prize for automatically detecting and tracing papyrus fibers in 3D CT scans. He credits frontier models like Astra for helping him make sense of the data's scale and complexity, calling scroll unwrapping about as "out of distribution" as it gets.
