Users petition Anthropic to restore the usage overview card cut from Claude desktop's new-session screen
tristatian · ghdev · 2026-10-15
A recent Claude desktop update (Code tab, Claude Code 2.1.296 on macOS) replaced the new-session screen with a folder/environment picker, dropping the usage overview card with it. A feature request on anthropics/claude-code (21 reactions) asks to bring it back.
- The card was the only in-app place to see your own Claude Code stats: sessions, messages, total tokens, active days, streaks, peak hour, favorite model, daily heatmap, model breakdown, and the 'you've used Nx more tokens than Pride and Prejudice' line.
- The underlying data still exists (separate issues debate the card's accuracy); the problem is purely that the new UI has no home for it.
- The author proposes restoring it below the picker, adding a sidebar 'Usage' entry, or exposing it via a /usage or /stats command — and treating it as a stable feature.
- As an alternative, the author rebuilt the card as an artifact page from /.claude/projects//.jsonl with a small script, but it's a static snapshot needing manual rebuilds.
