OpenAI boosts COBOL and Fortran coding — languages still running 95% of ATM transactions
SuB8u · x · 2026-10-20
OpenAI says its latest model advances bring stronger capabilities for building and migrating software in low-resource languages like COBOL, Fortran and Visual Basic. These languages have far less training data than Python/JavaScript yet support critical infrastructure: COBOL backs over 40% of online banking, 80% of in-person credit card transactions and 95% of ATM transactions, while Fortran powers weather forecasting and nuclear reactor safety analysis. Improving AI here could help teams maintain and modernize essential services.
