Google's FireSat constellation uses AI to spot wildfires as small as 5x5 meters from space

Google Research, together with Earth Fire Alliance and Muon Space, detailed how the FireSat satellite constellation detects early-stage wildfires from orbit.
- Approach: Instead of massive expensive satellites, FireSat uses a network of low-cost satellites with AI making up the precision gap. The team built custom cameras optimized for fire detection and trained the models by flying over controlled burns to establish a reliable baseline of what real fires look like from above.
- Capability: By tracking how scenes change over time, FireSat can spot fires as small as 5x5 meters — about the size of a car — with false positive detection kept under 5%.
- Impact: Earlier, more accurate detection gives firefighters a critical head start before fires spread.
