Do UIs still matter when AI agents become the main consumers of your data?
DanielLockyer · x · 2026-10-20
A developer sparked a discussion on X: frontend work consumes enormous time, but if AI agents—not humans—become the primary consumers of data, much of that UI investment loses its point.
Views in the thread: this is an evolution of the API vs UI debate—technical users will use AI the way they use CLIs to hit APIs, while non-technical users and corporate staff will still want a UI, especially since hallucinations mean data needs verification. An open question: UIs make data discoverable (you click around and learn what fields exist), and if that's abstracted away users won't know what to ask—though one reply argues AI can just generate on-the-fly dashboards from the APIs.
