"It always starts and ends in the data": AI attribution points back to training corpora
gerardsans · x · 2026-10-20
Continuing the same thread, gerardsans argues AI is fundamentally compression—more precisely encoding plus decoding. Data is always the source of every behavior; architecture, training, inference, deployment, application and user settings come after, but everything starts and ends with the data used.
Attribution, he contends, always points back to the training corpus: "It's not mysterious. It's a closed system"—a stance underpinning his argument that the tool is neutral and scrutiny should focus on the person wielding it and the corpus itself.
