GaryMarcus · x · 2026-10-20
Gary Marcus retweeted Justine Bateman's argument that social media made users financially dependent on platforms, and that AI companies like Anthropic will follow the same playbook: once the public relies economically, emotionally and intellectually on ChatGPT, Claude and AI agents, people will simply obey these systems, weakening governments and institutions. The attached image is Anthropic's announcement of its Public Benefit Fund, starting with 5% of shares, up to 20% committed to public good, with co-founders pledging 80% of their equity.
