SaTML got 450 submissions, 2x last year — chairs early-rejected ~40% of them

ETH professor and SaTML 2027 co-chair Florian Tramèr argues academia should review less:
- The slop tsunami: SaTML received 450 submissions, double last year's count, with no matching growth in reviewing capacity.
- Early reject phase: Simple signals (very short papers, single authors, LLM-favored wording) flagged half the submissions; 2-3 senior committee members spent 5-10 min each on them (3 days total). About two-thirds were rejected with short meta-reviews, cutting 40% of submissions overall including desk rejects. Signals had too many false positives to reject on directly.
- Broader claim: Not everything deserves full peer review; incentives should reward writing people actually read.
