VC explains the one case where it will happily back the same idea twice: different countries
dunkhippo33 · x · 2026-10-20
A VC (dunkhippo33) lays out the fund's portfolio strategy in a thread:
- Default rule: avoid investing in similar companies so they don't end up competing — most startups target global markets, so two lookalike companies would collide.
- The exception: backing the same idea in different countries. Fintech and healthcare regulation varies wildly by country, so these companies almost never go global — European and US neobanks don't cross over, and US healthcare solutions can't just roll out elsewhere.
- Rationale: human behavior is pretty similar across borders, so proven market pull in one country justifies backing the same idea in another.
- Bonus: portfolio founders face similar business problems under different regulations and can swap notes.
