Distributed Systems Resilience Explained: Circuit Breakers, Bulkheads and Graceful Degradation
_jaydeepkarale · x · 2026-10-19
Engineer jaydeepkarale wrapped up his three-part Distributed Systems Fundamentals series with a visual guide to containing failures instead of chasing zero failures.
- Circuit breakers: monitor downstream failures, trip at a threshold, fail fast, then probe with half-open requests to recover safely.
- Bulkheads: give each module (payments, recommendations, notifications) its own thread pool so one slow service can't exhaust all connections.
- Graceful degradation: when a dependency is down, return cached data, partial results or defaults to preserve the core experience.
Earlier parts covered idempotency, delivery guarantees and out-of-order messages. The series doubles as system design interview prep.
