The US Department of Energy will lend up to $4.4 billion to restart three shuttered nuclear plants — Palisades (Michigan), Three Mile Island's Crane Clean Energy Center (Pennsylvania), and Duane Arnold (Iowa) — restoring 2.25 GW, enough for roughly 2 million homes. No commercial reactor has resumed operation after starting decommissioning. Two plants already have premium power contracts with Big Tech buyers seeking carbon-free energy for AI data centers.
