Physicist says Claude redid his year-long, 500-page quantum gravity PhD calculation in 10 hours
LucaAmb · x · 2026-10-19
Turkish physicist Emre Onur Kahya reports that a quantum gravity calculation that took him a year and 500 pages of hand derivations in his PhD thesis was redone by Claude (Opus 5.5) in 10 hours, complete with a paper and GitHub repo — and it even found errors in his original work, though the final result held.
The companion repo eokahya/claude-audits-quantum-gravity details a step-by-step re-derivation of a published one-loop calculation: 18 tasks, 183 pages of derivations, and 38 reproducible checks.
Cosmologist WKCosmo, whose repost amplified the thread, argues such tedious calculations should indeed be automated: once you understand why Riemann tensor or loop-integral computations work, grinding through more examples adds little — you just want the answer.
