Paras Chopra reviews Sensing Qualia: a fresh "external" take on the hard problem
paraschopra · x · 2026-10-19
LossFunc founder Paras Chopra reviews philosopher Paul G. Skokowski's book Sensing Qualia, which advocates "Sensory Naturalism": the redness of red is a property of the world our senses measure, not an internal brain construct — so any perceiver of those photons would see the same red, resolving the age-old "same perception" question. Chopra likes its account of why dreams are coarser than perception (compressed higher-order beliefs), but objects that deep sleep and anesthesia involve sensory input without qualia. Overall: an accessible, science-serious break from internal models like functionalism.
