Ethan Mollick mocks MIT post on automated decisions, invoking IBM's SAGE history
emollick · x · 2026-10-19
Ethan Mollick criticizes a post from MIT/IBM as ironically out of touch: MIT CSAIL does extensive work on automated decision making, and the better framing would be their research on accountability and alignment as machines make more management decisions.
He adds a historical jab: it's especially rich coming from MIT and IBM, since both were key to SAGE two decades before the era referenced — an automated system that assigned interceptors and missiles against incoming aircraft, literally letting a computer make management decisions.
