'Written with AI' tells you nothing — the disclosure that matters is how
indianbull88 · reddit · 2026-10-19
The author argues the AI-and-authorship debate is stuck on the least informative question — whether a model was involved — when the fight over credit and royalties is downstream of how it was used.
- Contribution is cheap: editors, years of reading, half-remembered arguments all contribute; a model is just one more contributor
- Authorship is narrower: choosing which question deserves a year of your life, cutting claims that don't survive experience, standing behind wrong results. A model does none of this — not for lack of capability, but because it has nothing at stake
- "Used AI" covers at least three different books: drafted and lightly edited; used to find structure in existing material; used to argue against the writer until weak claims fell
The author would rather debate a disclosure norm distinguishing these uses than whether a model gets a byline — and questions whether a voluntary standard can survive at all.
