Anthropic commits 5% of shares to new Public Benefit Fund, questioned as a disclosure-free LLC
TheZachMueller · x · 2026-10-19
Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly owned entity seeded with 5% of its shares; the board may add up to 2% more for every 50% valuation increase over a baseline, totaling roughly 20% of shares committed to public good. Co-founders pledged 80% of their equity and about half of employees join a donation-matching program.
Critics note the fund is an LLC, not a 501(c)(3), so it has zero disclosure rules; "direct distributions to specific populations" are decided by Anthropic's board, which also holds unilateral discretion to dilute shareholders to fund the contributions.
