willcb: AGI won't spike GDP — he sees just 3.5-5% growth by 2030
willcb · x · 2026-10-19
Developer willcb pushes back on claims that AGI could drive double-digit GDP growth:
- The transformative innovations beyond software and knowledge work will look like drugs, devices, materials and semiconductors — longer lives, cheaper goods, continued Moore's law — but these show up mainly as consumer surplus, not GDP growth.
- Even full computer AGI wouldn't support 17% growth with high unemployment, since displaced workers' consumption drives a large fraction of growth and would require coordinated replacement income.
His personal range for 2030 is 3.5-5%, and that already assumes full computer AGI.
