Codex Desktop bug: remote compaction stuck on retired GPT-5.5, bricking old sessions
MRameez820 · ghdev · 2026-10-15
An openai/codex issue (#54226, labeled bug): Codex Desktop on Windows (26.1007.71326) can't continue long-running conversations created with the retired gpt-5.5 model — even after switching to supported models (GPT-5.6 Luna, GPT-6 Astra), remote compaction still attempts GPT-5.5 and fails with "model not supported with a ChatGPT account," bricking threads with extensive project history.
The reporter tried switching models, restarting, clearing caches, forking the conversation, and editing the stored model setting in the session JSONL, without success, and asks for a migration path that doesn't require resetting the thread.
