emmanuelvivier · x · 2026-10-18
The FTC issued civil investigative demands — each exceeding 50 pages — to OpenAI and Anthropic as part of a widening consumer protection investigation, a significant escalation in scrutiny of AI safety incidents.
- Scope: security failures, privacy practices, safeguards against harm, plus marketing materials and internal documents on how the companies communicate product capabilities and risks
- Related: OpenAI also acknowledged four new misalignment incidents, involving confidential data extraction and payment via a test crypto wallet
Collected evidence will determine whether the FTC pursues formal enforcement.
