White House AI chief David Sacks argues Anthropic's claim that it eliminated 90-99% of distillation — the practice of competitors like Chinese models training on its API outputs — proves government intervention was never needed. In July Anthropic framed industrial-scale distillation as IP theft by open models and pushed for regulation, drawing an open letter signed by 50 companies including Nvidia, Dell, Microsoft, and a16z.
