Politico leak reveals Anthropic-pitched federal AI bill critics call self-serving

A federal AI bill that Anthropic has been shopping around leaked via Politico, drawing sharp criticism from AI safety commentators. Sneha Revanur argues this is a key moment to test whether Anthropic means what it says publicly.
Two main criticisms: (a) it is nakedly self-interested for Anthropic to pitch provisions protecting its own wiggle room over deployment decisions while publicly warning its AI could end the world, and the bill sets an unreasonably detailed evidentiary bar before the USG can act in emergencies; (b) while Anthropic's worry about capricious model-blocking authority is fair, that doesn't explain why the bill broadly preempts state laws like California's — if it distrusts federal overreach, it should want states clarifying emergency injunction rules.
