Math Is Just the Beginning: All Science Will Be Unrecognizable in 5 Years
simmol · reddit · 2026-10-18
The author argues frontier models already crush humans on hard math, shaking mathematicians' identity, and theoretical/computational physics, chemistry and engineering are next: LLMs can identify important problems, connect concepts and run workflows — and 80-90% of professors only produce derivative work anyway.
Hence academic research worldwide will look completely different within 5 years. The caveat is experimental research: robots are far from proficient and cheap enough, so progress there will be slower. But theoretical/computational researchers face the same existential risk mathematicians already confront.
