Claude Desktop SSH remote breaks after updates: missing srv/<hash>/ dir causes ENOENT
henriwoodcock · ghdev · 2026-10-14
Issue #101998 on anthropics/claude-code: after app updates, Claude Desktop (2.37337.1) on macOS fails to connect to SSH remotes with "Couldn't upload to the remote (server binary): ENOENT", exhausting 3 auto-retries.
Root cause: the app SFTP-uploads the new server binary to /.claude/remote/srv/<hash>/server.<id>.part without creating srv/<hash>/ first.
Workaround: run mkdir -m 700 /.claude/remote/srv/<hash> on the remote, then retry.
The author reproduced this on two Macs (Oct 12 and Oct 14), each time right after an update. Even with the directory in place, follow-on failures appeared:
- NOINSTALLRESULT: the uploaded .part file never got renamed to server; fixed by verifying sha256 and renaming manually
- RPC handshake failure: daemon never started, rpc.sock missing; worked after manually launching the server with --serve --socket flags
The author suspects these secondary failures are related to the main bug.
