Andrew Ng and DeepLearning.AI released the AI Engineering Skills Map, distilled from analysis of 10,000+ job postings, dozens of structured interviews with AI experts, hiring managers and recruiters, plus surveys.
The map identifies four core skill areas:
- Building & deploying AI applications: LLM foundations, grounding models with data, agentic systems, evaluation-driven development, production operations, ML foundations
- Software engineering fundamentals: full-stack apps, data management, system architecture, security/reliability, scaling
- Using coding agents: directing workflows, enabling autonomy, reviewing work, customizing agents
- Shaping the build: driving the build loop, product decisions, communication/leadership, high agency ownership
It doubles as a course roadmap with a waitlist; the pitch is that AI has changed software building so fundamentally since 2022 that skilled practitioners face abundant opportunities.
