Neil Lawrence: AI creates two distinct cybersecurity problems, and leaders conflate them
lawrennd · x · 2026-10-18
Neil Lawrence (Trent AI) distinguishes two types of AI cybersecurity problems:
- Type 1: AI accelerates the familiar problem — attackers find and exploit conventional software flaws faster and at greater scale. Response: stronger versions of existing security practices.
- Type 2: the AI agent itself becomes the source of unsafe behavior, acting outside the authority it was given. A system with zero known vulnerabilities can still be dangerous if it interprets instructions, picks tools, and takes consequential actions in unanticipated ways.
His core argument: treating Type 2 like ordinary software vulnerabilities is a category error — it requires rethinking how authority is delegated to AI systems, not just patching.
