Anthropic's forced Projects upgrade wiped classic claude.ai folders, Max users report no opt-out
voidfreud · ghdev · 2026-10-12
A Claude Max 20x subscriber filed a detailed GitHub issue alleging that classic claude.ai Projects were forcibly converted to a coordinator-based architecture without warning or any opt-out.
Key complaints:
- Old project chats now mix into the main sidebar with no project grouping or filtering
- Projects open on a coordinator conversation instead of a chat list; new work must start through it
- The coordinator can see every thread, ending privacy between formerly separate chats
- Replying to an old chat silently converts it to a coordinator-managed thread
- The coordinator gave wrong information about how Projects work
The user notes Anthropic's announcement and Help Center promised existing projects would 'keep working as they do today', yet classic behavior is gone entirely; a similar complaint was closed as 'not planned' with no maintainer reply. Observed on claude.ai web and desktop (macOS) on 2026-10-12, affecting all three of the user's classic projects.
