Gemini CLI PR fixes settings overwrite: auth changes no longer wipe disk edits
seokjeongeum · ghdev · 2026-10-15
A P1 PR (#29762) on google-gemini/gemini-cli fixes a bug where confirming /auth signin wrote back the entire startup settings snapshot, wiping changes made while the CLI was running: newly added MCP servers disappeared, edited themes reverted, and deleted model preferences came back.
The fix persists only the property explicitly changed via LoadedSettings.setValue, diffing against the on-disk JSON, so unrelated additions, edits, deletions, comments, arrays, and raw environment placeholders are preserved. Explicit object assignment still replaces that subtree, direct saveSettings calls keep whole-file replacement semantics, invalid JSON stays intact with a parsing error, and no cross-process locking is added. The PR also documents /quit vs /auth signin//auth signout behavior and adds real-file regression tests covering stale snapshots. Still a draft pending a clean full-suite CI run.
