Mech interp researcher warns the field could be net negative for the world
ArthurConmy · x · 2026-10-17
Interpretability researcher Arthur Conmy makes two points: mech interp is benefiting from a "science overhang" — AI suddenly unlocks vast useful labour for fields that previously saw little of it, which is exciting. But he also warns the field could be net negative for the world: alignment is very hard, and a key path to things getting worse is misplaced confidence in unreliable interpretability evidence.
