Anthropic researchers: superposition isn't the blocker, interpretability is more tractable than assumed
akbirthko · x · 2026-10-17
Quoting Eric Ho and Curt Tigges: recent neuron research doesn't mean interpretability and alignment are solved — it's actually good news. Superposition, long seen as a major barrier to interpretability, turns out not to be the limiting factor, making the field more tractable than many assumed.
The authors argue the community should attempt ambitious interpretability work to solve technical alignment, while noting interpretability won't be one-shot. Ongoing directions include:
- The Encyclopedia project: fully reverse-engineering a 35B language model
- Substantial progress on detecting and mitigating reward hacking
Bottom line: the basic building blocks are more tractable than expected, and a way forward exists even though much remains to be done.
