Open-source MCP lets coding agents search Obsidian's 9,000-plugin directory before reinventing wheels

pitfa19 · reddit · 2026-10-16

Reddit user pitfa19 released obsidian-community-plugins-mcp, which lets coding agents search the official Obsidian plugin directory (about 9,000 plugins, 880 themes) for matches with download counts, latest version and last update before writing a duplicate plugin.

Implementation detail worth copying: it reads only three public JSON files from obsidianmd/obsidian-releases and joins them, so the agent never loads the raw 5 MB. Read-only, no telemetry, no API key, MIT licensed.

One package ships three ways: an MCP server, a CLI, and a skill that calls the CLI (lighter on context when the agent has a terminal). Demoed in Claude Code. Try: npx -y obsidian-community-plugins-mcp search <idea>.
