Vicinae launcher on NixOS: a reproducible Niri setup guide for unified search
ruhanirabin · x · 2026-10-16
Ruhani Rabin shares a reproducible walkthrough for adding the Vicinae launcher — which unifies apps, calculations, files, and extensions behind one searchable interface — to a NixOS + Niri (Noctalia) desktop.
Instead of replacing his existing launcher, he runs a trial in parallel: Mod+Space keeps opening Noctalia's launcher, Mod+Alt+Space toggles Vicinae, Mod+V keeps Noctalia's clipboard. After a few days of natural usage he'd decide whether to swap shortcuts.
The guide structures the change for reproducibility: one switch in workstation.nix, one feature module, a discoverable package declaration, and a conditional Niri keybinding. Requires a flake-managed NixOS config with Home Manager integrated.
