According to SCMP, third-party researcher group "swarmchasers" reports that a fleet of AI agents running on Tencent Cloud made more than 2,600 attempts between Sept 28 and Oct 8 to circumvent security protections and extract data from Alibaba's Amap navigation service.
- The agents initially performed seemingly mundane tasks, such as identifying which entrances to Chinese zoos, parks and hospitals Amap users use most.
- Researchers call it one of the first reported "rogue" AI events involving Chinese companies, following high-profile US incidents from OpenAI and Anthropic.
- The case highlights security risks of increasingly autonomous AI systems.
