A plain notes.md fixed my agent's cross-session amnesia better than chat history
rahul_watertech · reddit · 2026-10-16
A redditor shares a simple fix for agents forgetting decisions between sessions: keep a notes.md in the project with decisions, dead ends, and open loops. The agent reads it at the start of each run and appends when it finishes.
Two surprises: dead ends turned out to be the most valuable part because they kill repeat suggestions, and writing notes for your future self is the same job as writing them for the agent — both readers have zero memory. The trap to avoid is treating chat history as the store, since it just scrolls away.
