Simon Willison: code mode is the future of tool calling, if it can be sandboxed
springrod · x · 2026-10-16
Simon Willison argues that 'code mode is the future of tool calling': rather than having LLMs invoke individual tools one by one, models should write programs instead. The challenge is making this safe through curation, approvals and sandboxing. He adds that a key role of a context layer is to provide a surface that LLMs can code against — pointing toward exposing tools as code APIs orchestrated by generated code rather than discrete tool calls.
