Dev who spent thousands on V100s for local DeepSeek: just pay for Claude instead
lxfater · x · 2026-10-16
Developer lxfater shares a hands-on postmortem of spending tens of thousands of yuan on V100 GPUs to self-host DeepSeek V4.1, and concludes local deployment isn't worth it for most developers: quantized local models are noticeably dumber, and concurrency demands serious hardware. In fast iteration, a task Claude finishes in 30 minutes can stall local models for hours on a small bug.
His cheaper middle ground: set up a free-model router in magpie with Claude as the orchestrator — route hard queries to SOTA models, junk queries to free ones, and have Claude periodically review the output. But for urgent tasks, go all-in on SOTA. His verdict: reliably having Claude beats a $10k+ local rig. The self-hosted setup is now available free on Opencode.
