Australia's AERO guidance: avoid AI entirely in first three years of primary school
lmoroney · x · 2026-10-16
The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) released its AI in Schools explainer on Oct 14, warning of a "performance paradox" where students perform better with AI but learn less, and noting research on AI in primary schools is nearly nonexistent. Its five considerations: evidence-based teaching, monitoring learning risks, clear AI expectations, rethinking assessment, and a culturally responsive lens. CEO Jenny Donovan told ABC that AI should be avoided entirely in the first three years of primary school, used carefully after, but introduced in high school since students will need it. Teachers may draft feedback with AI while keeping judgment responsibility. The author proposes a test: could the student still do the task tomorrow with the tool closed?
