Parallel prompting as initialization lifts the floor of LLM-driven discovery, paper finds
TheGradient · x · 2026-10-16
A new paper on LLM-driven discovery harnesses finds that the quality of sequential discovery depends heavily on the quality of the initial population.
LLMs are increasingly used to discover new algorithms, theorems and drugs by iteratively optimizing an objective inside a harness. The key finding: with a fixed compute budget, parallel prompting serves as a powerful initialization strategy, raising the discovery floor — seeding a diverse population before running serial optimization pays off more than starting immediately.
