Anthropic researcher pushes back on viral interp paper: evidence doesn't overturn the field
livgorton · x · 2026-10-16
Researcher liv Gorton argues that a recent interpretability paper risks leaving readers with the false impression that a central idea in interp rested on a mistake and has been overturned. She contends the evidence doesn't support that strong claim, even if some findings prove valuable. She notes that neurons being more useful for interp than commonly assumed was already argued by others (e.g., Arora et al., 2025), and that the paper's developmental structure might actually be leveraged to make interp much easier.
