Fil-C author says AI helped him beat Canonical's Rust coreutils on memory safety
filpizlo · x · 2026-10-15
Ubuntu 26.10 completes the rollout of Rust-based uutils coreutils, with Canonical mentioning "Rust" 8 times in its press release versus 3 for "Linux". Fil-C author filpizlo counters: a major distro's full-time Rust team produced coreutils and sudo clones that aren't truly memory safe — hundreds of unsafe uses and dependencies on unsafe C libraries — while he, in his spare time with Fil-C plus AI coding agents, achieved a fully memory-safe Linux desktop userland, with unsafe code limited to the shared Fil-C runtime and OpenSSL's assembly crypto kernels. The release also adds Myna on-device speech-to-text, post-quantum package signing, and Microsoft Entra ID integration.
