Why data companies are printing money: labs pay millions for env-shaped nails

sarahookr answered "why are data companies making so much money right now?": frontier labs lack what matters most for the next era of intelligence — product surface.
Reposting tanmay2099's observation: nearly all labs hold an RL-shaped hammer and are paying data vendors millions for env-shaped nails, i.e., RL training environments. The closer an environment is to the digital worlds of real people, the higher the price.
The upshot: labs have compute and models but not the real user-facing surfaces where agents will act, so they pay a premium to those who own them.
