Oversubscribed London AI x Science hackathon maps researchers' biggest software bottlenecks
ersatzben · x · 2026-10-15
Science Works and Inherent Labs are running an AI × Science hackathon in London on Oct 16–18. It is heavily oversubscribed, with about half of hackers coming from outside the UK "golden triangle."
The organizers argue much scientific software is outdated, hard to use, non-interoperable, expensive, and not AI-ready. An attached chart lists the tools researchers themselves flagged as bottlenecks, topped by ImageJ/Fiji, Jupyter notebooks, MATLAB, lab instrument software, GraphPad Prism, SPSS, CFD/FEM packages, FlowJo, NMR software, and sequence tools like BLAST — a useful demand map for AI-ifying scientific software.
