ML's open research culture became dueling ads, and academia can't guilt industry into sharing secrets
RexDouglass · x · 2026-10-15
RexDouglass on academia vs industrial AI research: he's sympathetic — ML's once-open research culture turned into dueling advertisements, but academia couldn't bully or guilt industry back into revealing trade secrets. Now academia seems to be talking itself into culturally ignoring the work. Replying to a critic, he concedes industry shops don't produce scientific results (no SOTA priors, no replicable posteriors) — as has been true in ML for years — but mathematicians haven't shown why they must either.
