CoScreen Founders Launch Petal, a Free Open-Source Pair Programming Tool
thedracle · hn · 2026-10-15
Jason Thomas, co-founder of CoScreen, announces Petal, a free open-source pair programming tool built by four ex-CoScreen team members after Datadog sunset the service on July 31. He recounts the category's grim pattern: Screenhero was bought by Slack in 2015 and shut down in 2017; CoScreen was acquired by Datadog in 2022 and discontinued; Around was bought by Miro and closed in March 2025; Multi was acqui-hired by OpenAI in 2024 and killed within a month. Petal aims to break the cycle by keeping the beloved 'throw a window onto someone else's screen' collaboration experience free and open source.
