BBC reports new details in the OpenAI spying case: 35-year-old Saudi engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan was arrested by the FBI for allegedly planting a hidden recording device behind a TV in an OpenAI meeting room, charged with intercepting oral communications.
Per the complaint, during roughly a year at the company he:
- Repeatedly queried the internal AI assistant about meeting-room schedules (Aug 17–Sep 16), including where external partners usually met OpenAI staff;
- Used a chatbot on his spouse's account in late September to ask how to build, install, hide and remotely access a recorder, ending up with a Seeed XIAO device wrapped in toilet paper;
- Targeted a room regularly used for "highly confidential technical, commercial and strategic information" and OpenAI's government engagements.
His intent remains unclear, but prosecutors' evidence leans heavily on his own conversations with AI assistants.
