The structural ceiling on Anthropic and OpenAI valuations: open-source catches up faster than willingness to pay
Franktradinglog · x · 2026-10-15
The author argues frontier labs like Anthropic and OpenAI face a structural valuation ceiling: the gap between open and closed models is narrowing systematically — today's SOTA becomes the open baseline in roughly 12–18 months (Gemma, Qwen, Llama all confirm this).
This creates an 'already good enough' market tier: support, copywriting, and basic coding work fine on cheaper models a generation behind. If small on-device models match today's Claude-level agent capabilities by 2028, the frontier market shrinks to a much smaller pool of edge-case users. Meanwhile frontier training runs are heading toward $10B+ capex — labs are racing to monetize before capability commoditizes.
