Cache Maxxer: open-source Claude Code plugin keeps prompt cache warm to cut costs 96%
sohamspat · reddit · 2026-10-14
Claude Code's prompt cache expires after 5 minutes or 1 hour idle, forcing a full cache rewrite on the next message — $5/M tokens (5-min) or $8/M (1-hr) on Opus versus $0.20/M to read. Cache Maxxer, a free MIT-licensed plugin, adds a band above the input box showing a cache countdown synced to your real cache length, live hit rates, and a notice on every rebuild with cost and cause (idle, model switch, compact, tools changed). A "keep warm" ping just before expiry pays only the read cost and resets the timer, auto-stopping after 3 hours idle.
Under the hood it reads cache read/write numbers Claude Code already logs, flagging rebuilds as requests writing >20K tokens while reading less than half the prior cache, using 0.1% of one core. Install via the Claude plugin marketplace.
