DeepMind survey of 12 frontier researchers: execution automates first, ideation stays human

Part 4/9 of DeepMind's report thread covers Finding 2: some ML R&D components are being automated, but humans remain involved.
A survey of 12 senior leaders and researchers embedded in frontier development found automation is highest in well-specified, verifiable execution tasks, and lowest in open-ended scientific ideation, novel experimental design, diagnosing subtle training instabilities, and long-horizon research taste. In software engineering, issue resolution, and data curation, AI agents now act as high-leverage assistants authoring a majority of production code and bug fixes.
